About
Welcome!
Mission, Vision and the "Why"
Vision- To “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:18) by sharing the Gospel with those around us and to prepare students for citizenship on earth and in heaven through sound doctrine and a Classical Lutheran education.
Mission- To “train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6) in a home environment, partnering with parents, in a Lutheran Liberal Arts education. We will develop critical thinkers, life-long learners, and exceptional citizens who defend their faith and stand up for those who are unable to defend themselves. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)
What makes us different from other small schools/communities? Education should prepare students for this world as well as eternal life. We will start the day with worship and prayer before diving into our work for the day. We will also end our day similarly. “But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”” (Matthew 19:14). ADLC incorporates small school model methods from models including: a Lutheran Classical one-room schoolhouse, a micro-school, learning pod, and a homeschool co-op. We do not compete with the public-school educational approach. Instead, we use a different, historically effective educational method for raising critical thinking adults. We educate the whole child in both body and spirit with what is True, Good, and Beautiful.
Why Lutheran? Lutherans believe in the authority of Scripture “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16), justification by grace apart from works through Jesus’ dying and rising “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that faith is given to us through the Holy Spirit (“So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17; “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:16). We follow Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions.
Why Classical? The Seven Liberal Arts are critical for the developing mind. This includes the Trivium of Language- Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric, along with the Quadrivium- Arithmetic, Music Theory, Geometry, and Astronomy. Because children learn at their own pace, we focus on ability and progress rather than strict age/grade. We follow the stages of learning as Dorthy Sayers explained so eloquently in her essay/speech The Lost Tools of Learning(1). The Grammar stage focuses on acquiring as many facts as possible, memorizing poems and dates, Latin vocabulary and declensions, math facts and formulas, etc. The Dialectic stage is logical and argumentative. “Why” is an important question to ask and receive an answer. The final stage is the Rhetorical stage where they learn to defend their “why.” With the facts remembered from the Grammar stage and the Logic from the Dialectic stage, they express their thoughts concisely and coherently. Why a Homeschool Community? Many homeschoolers are looking for community to support their homeschooling journey. As a service to our local homeschoolers, ADLC is offering Monday co-op classes to those homeschoolers who are interested.
What about time and location? Our school schedule is simply a framework to create rhythm in our day. It is flexible depending on the needs of the students. We currently meet in a house. Space constraints may necessitate a move to another building in the future.
Who administers the school? Elizabeth Hansen is a homeschooling mom of 8 ages 7-22. She has graduated 3 children (so far) and the younger 5 are still homeschooling. She has over 15 years of experience teaching grades K-12. In the past, she has tutored for Classical Conversations and taught at CHEER Co-op. Her children desired to learn with other children and so Agnus Dei Learning Center- A Classical Lutheran Homeschool Community was born. Husband, Jeremiah, occasionally helps with science and math, as needed and her oldest daughter, Lydia, tutors Logic as her schedule allows.
